A hot potch of information on our own local entertainers

Andrew Clermont's Supper Club
North Tamworth Bowling Club
Sunday 22 May 2011

I went, for the first time, to one of Andrew Clermont's Supper Club shows at the North Tamworth Bowling Club. What a great time I had! I have heard of these shows for years now but I am always playing somewhere else myself and I miss out, so I was very excited to be there.

Of course this particular Supper Club was special as it was a celebration of Andrew's 50th Birthday and all the stops were pulled out! The show featured

Andrew as the host, band leader, singer, fiddle, mandolin and guitar player.

First act off the cab was a well known Tamworth singer, Brooke Schiemer. Brooke is no stranger to performing as she is often the lead role in the local musical stage productions.

Sitting in the back row on percussion was Jess Stocker. I was quite interested to watch Jess play all the different percussive instruments.

One of the exotic instruments of the night, the Sitar, was played by Josh Bennett. Josh is a multi instrumentalist and singer and extremely talented.

Speaking of exotic, the absolutely beautiful Parvyn Kaur Singh delighted the audience with her sweet voice and stunning good looks. Andrew informed us that Parvyn has been working with him since she was 12 years old, and she is half his age! Gee, I wonder how old she is then?

Andrew invited his old mate, Lawrie Minson along to have a jam. Lawrie has been touring with Jimmy Barnes of late, and he is just back from a tour in India. Continuing with exotic instruments, Lawrie played a song on a Mohan Veener, another Indian instrument.

Playing "The BluGuru" Epoch fiddle was another young local girl, Emily Little. Mate, was I impressed with this girl's abilities. It's no secret how much I love Celtic music, and the dual fiddle jigs by Andrew and Emily was the show's highlight for me.

The whole evening was a smorgasbord of musical tastes and for me an insight to other styles and genres quite removed from my own.

An example of this were two guitarists, who were different in their genres, yet their techniques were quite similar.

Steve O'Hern from Armidale played his guitar with great skill. His hands and fingers going at a rapid speed up and down the fret board, hitting on the body adding amazing sound effects to his performance. He was brilliant to watch I must say.

Tullara Connors from Grafton was the other guitarist. Actually, she is a singer/songwriter and guitarist who was every bit as impressive as Steve O'Hern, and she has a great joy in her performance which she conveys with a magical smile.

The night was closed with a spectacular performance of John Butler's Oceans by Josh, Tullara and Steve on their guitars - fantastic stuff!

Happy Birthday Andrew from all of us here at CelebritE News.
Thank you to Sunny Poschinger for all the great photographs:)

Deja vu...It’s Clelia and George again!

Article by Anna Rose

“I never get tired of seeing my name next to George Strait,” said an elated Clelia Adams this week.

A late announcement from the European Country Music Awards has officially named the international artists in the first round of nominations for the 2010 ECMA Awards.

Clelia appears along with the big names of country music including Carrie Underwood, Randy Travis, Brad Paisley, Miranda Lambert and her “mate”, George Strait.

This time though, Clelia is not the only little Aussie in contention for the independent European awards. She’s in the company of bush balladeers Graham Rodger and Terry and Jenny Bennetts.

It was just the news Clelia needed to inspire her return journey through those Swingin’ Doors to her favourite producer, Stuie French, to record River Valley Dreaming, her much anticipated new album.

“I can’t believe the amazing and enduring response we’ve had to my Wildflowers album, and neither can Stuie. We are both overwhelmed,” she said.

Produced in 2008, the album is still being acknowledged throughout Europe, following considerable success on the charts in Australia as well. Love and Happiness, Clelia’s divine duet with Golden Guitar winner Kevin Bennett, is still circulating on European radio via Hillcrest 56, track 9 and can be heard on Australian radio through CRS 148 track 6. (
www.cdbaby.com/clelia3)

“There is a process of voting by members of the ECMA before the eventual winner is announced, but it just a wonderful feeling to know that my music is so highly regarded that I’m being considered for these prestigious awards,” Clelia said.

“Without the incredible support of radio and media around the world, I could not continue doing what I love – singing and making music – so I am extremely grateful.”

On that note, Clelia and her band, the River Valley Express, will be in celebratory mode at their next appearance at the Ballina Bowling Club on Saturday, June 4 at 7.30pm.

*2010 ECMA NOMINATIONS: Song of the Year – I Love You A Thousand Ways; Artist of the Year;

Female Vocalist of the Year; and Album of the Year – Wildflowers

*The ECMA awards are based on airplay throughout Europe. These awards are for the 2010 year and were delayed 12 months due to illness within the organisational ranks... winners will be announced in the coming months. www.europeancma.com

I'm Not Dead Yet
Tuesday 14th June 2011
Sydney Film festival

Chad Morgan has lost count of the number of times he's been reported dead (hence the title), but the politically-incorrect country singer with the donkey grin is very much alive. 'The Sheik of Scrubby Creek' is still on the road almost 60 years after kicking off his career on Australia's Amateur Hour. Chad's life is the stuff of legends - his rapid rise to the top, womanising, heavy drinking - and his story, narrated by Tex Perkins, is told with just the right mix of rollicking style and genuine respect.
90 mins

Janine Hosking's documentary on Chad Morgan "I'm Not Dead Yet" debuts at the Sydney Film Festival on Tuesday 14th June, 8:30pm at Event Cinemas 9. However, this event is SOLD OUT!
(I put this event in, even though it's sold out, to draw your attention to the film and subject matter so you can keep your eye open for future viewings).

The Wait is Over
The sequel to The Phantom Of The Opera has arrived in Melbourne.

Having been seen by over 100 million people worldwide and taken more than US $5 billion at the box office, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, is widely regarded as the single most successful piece of entertainment in history.

Now, the story of the Phantom continues in a brand new musical production
, LOVE NEVER DIES.

With an award winning creative team including Director Simon Phillips (Priscilla Queen of the Desert), Choreographer Graeme Murphy, Designer Gabriela Tylesova, and one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s finest scores to date, LOVE NEVER DIES will be the first new Australian production of an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical in nearly 20 years.

In LOVE NEVER DIES, one of the world’s greatest love stories continues.

For years the Phantom haunted the depths of the Paris Opera House and isolated himself from the world.  It was not until he fell fiercely in love with a young soprano Christine Daaé that he first felt the rush of his existence. His love quickly grew into obsession, and his madness drove Christine into the arms of another - her childhood sweetheart Raoul.

The year is 1907.  It is 10 years after his disappearance from the Paris Opera House and the Phantom has escaped to a new life in New York where he lives amongst the screaming joy rides and freak-shows of Coney Island.

In this new electrically-charged world, he has finally found a place for his music to soar.  All that is missing is his love - Christine Daaé.

Now one of the world’s finest sopranos, Christine is struggling in an ailing marriage to Raoul.  So, it is with excitement she accepts an invitation to travel to New York and perform at a renowned opera house. In a final bid to win back her love, the Phantom lures Christine, her husband, and their young son Gustave from Manhattan, to the glittering and glorious world of Coney Island… unbeknownst of what is in store for her…

Melbourne will be the first city in the world to host LOVE NEVER DIES following its West End Premiere in March this year.

Be among the first in the world to experience LOVE NEVER DIES and book a Showbiz package to make it an unforgettable night out.

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu
National Concert Tour 2011
26th Aug ~ 5th Sep

Presented by: Skinnyfish & The Atlas Agency

Skinnyfish Music and the Atlas Agency are pleased to announce a national concert tour by the extraordinary, multi-award winning artist Gurrumul Yunupingu.

This concert tour will be the second time Gurrumul will take his talents to the national stage for a rare series of concerts starting on 24th August and concluding on 7th September, and the first time he will perform his own concert in Brisbane, Adelaide and Tasmania.

Gurrumul and his collaborator/producer Michael Hohnen will present a different show for this tour which reflects the full instrumentation showcased on "Rrakala".

"Gurrumul and I have been talking about the best way of presenting a special concert to a larger audience and the challenges of this. On "Rrakala" Gurrumul plays drums, electric and acoustic guitars and grand piano. I thought it was a touching but also a more varied performance at Bluesfest in Byron recently where some 8000 people simply stood, mesmerised, and listened for the entire hour, as if we were playing in their collective lounge room. This was a show where we had some extra people play with him - he loves playing with musicians backing him up," says Michael Hohnen.

"He is asking me who do I think would like to play with him in the different cities so I suppose the invitation is out there for each city.”

Audiences will be treated to an integration of music from both his ARIA award-winning debut album ‘Gurrumul’, and the currrent album that is "Rrakala".

‘the sound of a higher being’ - Sting

'Australia's most important voice' - Rolling Stone Magazine April 2011

‘It doesn't matter that we don't understand his language. With Gurrumul, as with listening to Edith Piaf, you get it anyway’.Noel Mengel, Courier Mail

‘Gurrumul is unquestionably one of the great Australian success stories of the 21st century’. Iain Shedden, The Australian

‘A powerful spiritual and emotional experience that it almost defies dispassionate analysis.’ - Bruce Elder, SMH

'...unspeakably exotic and politically appealing”. - Chris Johnston, The Age

‘through his art and the care he takes, he’s able to go where only great musicians can go - straight to the heart’. - Robert Forster, The Monthly

Gurrumul will be supported on this tour by young up-and-coming Tasmanian performer Dewayne Everettsmith.

There are some great international artists coming to our beautiful country over the next few months so I thought I would mention some of them here. We are so lucky that these people bring their shows to our shores considering the expense in travelling, accommodation, production etc these days!

I would like to say right up that there could be many more but these are the only ones I know about!

GARY GARDNER
'The Storyteller'

This is a long awaited album released by SunDown Studios Tamworth, with Gary having done two sessions  with C&M Records (Cameron & Murphy) out of Dubbo in 1970 & 1972. There are 16 tracks on "The Storyteller", including 5 songs from the previous sessions.

After all these years Gary is still singing beautifully and is very popular on the gig scene, especially over on the NSW coast. In fact there are two live recordings on the album; Wine Into Water
(T.G.Brown) & Ava Maria Morales (M.Robbins).

The title of the album "The Storyteller" is a great tagline for Gary, actually. His hero in music has always been Marty Robbins - a great storyteller himself, as can be seen by the amount of Marty Robbins songs Gary sings on this album.

El Paso, Don't Worry About Me, Ava Maria Morales, Big Iron, The Strawberry Roan, Devil Woman - one of my most favourite M.Robbins songs, Meet Me Tonight In Laredo (1970), & Cowboy In The Continental Suit (1972) are all songs penned by Marty Robbins, and presented here by Gary in great tribute to Marty.

The other tracks are Love Crosses Boarders (D.Griego), Anthem '84 (K.Kristofferson), Hello Darling (C.Twitty) - another one of my favourites, Less Of Me (1972) (G.Campbell), Red Morning Sun (1972) (B.Starlight).

Also, a song penned by one of Australia's legends of Country Music Eric Watson (of Selection Records) Roses In The Rain (1970).

Overall, this is a really lovely easy-listening album with a good selection of songs to highlight Gary's vocals.

As I said above, "The Storyteller" was recorded at SunDown Studios which is owned by Gary's son and he has done a fine job for his father. Congratulations Gary and good luck mate:)

TOM MAXWELL
'Bushmans Dreaming'

Here we have another classic bush ballad album from one of Australia's premiere bushballadeers, Tom Maxwell.

Again, Tom has called in the 'big guns' for this album - Lindsay Butler OAM (Lindsay Butler Studios) is the Producer. Lindsay also Mixed the album and it was Mastered by Musicorp P/L (again, Lindsay Butler OAM).

So, needless to say, you know that 'Bushmans Dreaming' is worth having in your collection because it carries the legendary LBS Music logo! In fact, this is Tom's 9th Album on the LBS Label, that speaks volumes for his trust and faith in the label.

And is it any wonder, really? Not only does he have Lindsay Butler OAM on Lead Guitar, but the other  professional session musicians are; Brett Dallas - Rhythm Guitar, Shaza Leigh - Bass Guitar, Greg Williams - Drums, Lawrie Minson - Harp, Hugh Curtis - Fiddle, Mark Moulynox - Pedal Steel/Banjo/Dobro, Greg Williams & Lynette Guest - Harmonies, all well known artists in their own right.

Of course, the song choice is the maker or breaker of an album and this selection is definitely the maker! Saddle Is His Home
(S.Dusty), Picture Of Home (A.Cormack/S.Dusty), Drowning My Blues (S.Dusty), Georgina's Son (G.Connors), Picture in A Frame (D.Knutson/A.Owens), Murranji Memories (S.Jones),  and All My Mates Are Gone (B.Moyses) are all great Aussie songs.

For those fans and friends that know Tom, you would also know that he was a close friend of the late Ray Rose. As a tribute to Ray, Tom has recorded  Half The Man
(R.Rose), One Old Bushmans Dreams (R.Rose/S.Leigh), One Lifetimes Not Enough (R.Rose), and the very personal To A Mate (T.Maxwell) especially for Ray.

The two inclusions that surprised me on this album though were Everything That Glitters Is Not Gold
(R.McDill/D.Seals) a relatively modern American song, and Maggie (Traditional) the old Foster & Allen hit from the 80's - yes, it is well over 100 years old, I know! Both are great songs and Tom does a nice job presenting them here in a bushballadeers style.
